The state of the British Blogosphere - the results of Shiny Media's first reader survey
A couple of weeks ago we conducted a survey across all of our blogs. The response rate was fantastic in that we got 500 replies within the first 48 hours, and this was in spite of the fact we specified that the respondents had to be from the UK.
The survey made fascinating reading for us as well arguably providing the first ever snapshot of the state of the British blogosphere.
Here’s what we found out.
Our readers are young-ish. - 70% are between the ages of 18-35
They are also pretty affluent - Nearly 50% earn more than £26k per year. Of those on lesser incomes over half are students.
They are a bright bunch too – A quarter are students, 20% work in IT and just under 10% are involved in the media.
They live down south – almost 50% of our readers are from London or the south east of England.
They are devoted to their favourite Shiny blogs – An astonishing 53% read their top Shiny blog at least once a day with seventeen percent going back to the blog at least twice a day.
They are plugged into the blogosphere – Over a third of our readers also check out Gizmodo and Engadget. The two most popular non gadget blogs are Go Fug Yourself and Boing Boing.
However very few read British blogs – 5% read Popjustice while only 3.7% check out Gadget Candy. Traditional websites like The Register and Digital Spy are significantly more popular.
They are a creative bunch – Just over 50% contribute to a website, while 47% have their own blog. 34% have their own MySpace site - don’t we all ?– but only 2% have their own Moblog. 43% blog because they see it as a creative outlet, while 4.9% want to break into journalism – send us your CVs.
They aren’t that fussed about newspapers – 33% don’t buy newspapers at all while 40% don’t read online newspapers either. The most popular, both online and paper versions, was The Guardian with The Times in second place.
We also found out…
Which gadgets they own
How much they spend on technology and how often
How much they spend on fashion
And which online fashion retailers they like.

I'd love to see the rest of the details. It is very fascinating even though I'm in the US and so I did not try to answer, I fit in w/a lot of the demographics you have given so far...33 y/o, have my own blog and myspace, check out endgadget, gizmodo, etc, get most of my news online though and I check shiny shiny multiple times a day. I usually just have a firefox tab for it and keep refreshing throughout the day.
I'd be interested in seeing some more of the results. I think i'm one of these people who spends a lot of time on various blogs... especially now that my exams are over and I've left school.
